Breaking the Cycle
The depletion of headwater forests around the globe is just the tip of the iceberg in the ongoing climate breakdown. Their destruction accelerates climate change, disrupts local ecosystems, and threatens global environmental stability. Addressing the preservation of these forests is crucial, as it plays a significant role in combating the broader climate crisis.
Nan province’s watershed forests are facing serious environmental challenges, including deforestation, soil degradation, and the harmful impact of chemicals from invasive agriculture, all of which threaten the health of the environment and all lives that depend on it.
The Chao Phraya River, which receives 40-45% of its flow from the Nan River, depends on the health of Nan's headwater forests. These forests are vital not only for the river but also for the broader environmental stability of Thailand and Southeast Asia.
For Nan local communities, the lack of alternatives forces many to turn to unsustainable farming methods. To break this cycle, a new approach is needed—one that restores the environment while providing sustainable options.
